Valve May Launch Steam Frame to Challenge Meta Quest with Roy Controllers in Late 2025

Valve is rumored to be developing several new devices, including Steam Deck 2 and a Steam console, but recent information suggests the next project could be a standalone VR headset called Steam Frame. This device may be a rebrand of the long-rumored Valve Deckard and is expected to launch by the end of 2025 to compete with Meta Quest 3.

According to trusted X leaker SadlyItsBradley, Valve is renaming SteamVR Overlays to Frames, aligning with the trademark registration of Steam Frame. This indicates that Steam Frame is likely to be a standalone VR headset, similar to Meta Quest 3, that does not require a PC to operate.

The Steam Frame is expected to feature the Roy VR Controllers and may support wireless PC connectivity via the SteamVR Link Wireless Dongle for a high-quality VR experience. Reports from Reddit and TweakTown suggest the headset could run on SteamOS and may be priced around $1,200 (approximately 40,000 THB), though this could vary depending on taxes and production costs.

When compared to the more affordable Meta Quest 3, which currently holds over 63% of Steam VR users as of August 2025, Steam Frame may face challenges in terms of pricing. Valve is expected to offer at least 1440p resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate to compete with Quest 3 and surpass the previous Valve Index.

There are also rumors that Steam Frame could launch alongside a new console, Valve Fremont, which would also run on SteamOS. However, nothing has been officially confirmed by Valve, so all details remain speculative. Analysts suggest that Steam Frame could mark a significant step for Valve’s return to the VR market following Half-Life: Alyx in 2020.

If Steam Frame truly becomes a standalone VR device, it will directly challenge Meta Quest in a market currently dominated by Meta, leveraging SteamOS and direct access to the Steam game library without the need for a VR-ready PC. However, its success will depend heavily on pricing, performance compared to competitors, and future releases like Samsung Project Moohan and Meta Quest 4.

Valve’s Steam Frame could be the game-changer VR fans have been waiting for, but its impact will hinge on how well it balances innovation, accessibility, and value.

Final Thought: Steam Frame has the potential to shake up the VR industry by combining Valve’s ecosystem with standalone freedom, but it faces a critical test against established competitors and future VR innovations. The coming months will reveal whether Valve can reclaim its position as a VR leader.
