Manga Biography Chronicles Yuji Horii, Creator of Dragon Quest
Yuji Horii, the legendary creator behind the Dragon Quest franchise since its first release in 1986, is set to have his life story told in a new manga biography published by Shogakukan on February 24, 2026.
The manga presents a semi-dramatic retelling of Horii’s journey, from a young boy growing up on Awaji Island to becoming one of the most influential game designers and writers in the industry today. The narrative emphasizes the creation of the Dragon Quest series while framing Horii’s personal experiences in the style of an RPG adventure. Key moments are depicted as pivotal choices, encounters with companions who become his greatest allies, and challenges that shaped his path—mirroring the very games he created.
Horii’s philosophy that “life is an RPG” permeates the story, making the manga appealing to both children and adults alike. The volume will span 160 pages and is priced at 1,210 yen (~250 THB) for pre-orders. While there is no news yet on other language anguage release, fans may watch for announcements from Thai publishers such as Bongkoch Publishing, who often license Shogakukan titles.
This upcoming manga provides an intimate look into the life of the father of Dragon Quest, capturing the spirit of creativity, perseverance, and adventure that defined one of gaming’s most iconic franchises.
