Netflix Removes Mobile-to-TV Casting Feature for Most Users

Netflix is making a major change to how viewers can watch content. The streaming giant has removed the ability to cast from smartphones to TVs for most users. According to the official help page, Netflix no longer supports casting to most TVs and streaming devices, advising users to control playback directly via their TV remote instead.
Details of the Change
The update has been noticeable over the past few weeks. Reddit users report the feature was removed on November 10 without prior notice. International media also confirm that after updating the Netflix app to the latest version, the casting option disappeared from users’ screens immediately.

Some exceptions remain. Users with older Chromecast devices or TVs with built-in Google Cast can still cast, but only if they subscribe to the ad-free plan, starting at $17.99 USD per month.
For those on the lower-cost ad-supported plan, priced at $7.99 USD per month, mobile-to-TV casting is no longer available. Even older Chromecast devices cannot bypass this restriction, meaning users must use the Netflix app installed directly on their TV or streaming device.
Reasoning and Context
Netflix has not provided a detailed explanation for removing the feature. The move is reminiscent of the 2019 decision to end support for Apple’s AirPlay, which was said to be linked to maintaining a high-quality viewing experience. It is possible the company is making similar quality-focused adjustments with this new policy.
Currently, there are no additional statements from Netflix regarding this change. Media outlets continue to follow up for clarification, and users will need to monitor for further updates on the casting policy.
