Concern is growing in the handheld gaming community after signs emerged that AMD may be reducing software support for the Ryzen Z1 Extreme. This APU powers popular devices like the ASUS ROG Ally and the Lenovo Legion Go, which many players still use daily.
The issue surfaced when Legion Go users noticed that chipset updates stopped after August 2025. When users contacted Lenovo support, staff reportedly said AMD no longer provides active support for the chip. This explanation quickly raised concerns across the community.
Why Continued Updates Matter
Handheld gaming PCs depend heavily on driver and firmware updates. These updates improve performance, fix bugs, and support new games. Without them, even strong hardware can age faster than expected.
The situation looks worse when compared to newer devices. The Legion Go S, which uses Ryzen Z2 Extreme, still receives regular GPU driver updates. This contrast frustrates early buyers who paid premium prices for Z1 Extreme systems.
Universal Drivers Are a Limited Workaround
Lenovo has advised users to try AMD’s universal graphics drivers. While helpful, these drivers do not fully optimize handheld hardware. They may miss power tuning, thermal controls, or device-specific features. Lenovo also confirmed that Z1 and Z2 drivers cannot work interchangeably due to architectural differences.
Some users now compare AMD’s approach with competitors. Intel-based handhelds, such as MSI Claw, continue to receive frequent updates and new features. For many buyers, long-term support now matters as much as raw performance.
Uncertainty Remains
This is not the first time AMD has faced similar rumors. In late 2025, reports claimed AMD would drop support for older Radeon GPUs. AMD later denied those claims. That history suggests this situation may still change.
For now, Ryzen Z1 Extreme owners remain in limbo. An official statement from AMD could restore confidence. Until then, the future of support remains uncertain.
