Ryukishi07 Says Silent Hill Is More Than a Name, It Is a Phenomenon

In 2025, Silent Hill f became one of the most talked about games of the year, earning strong recognition not only from gamers but also from the wider pop culture community. Even people who did not directly experience the game’s psychological horror became familiar with its characters and themes. However, many players continued to question why the game carries the name Silent Hill despite not being set in the iconic town itself.

Recently, Ryukishi07, the renowned Japanese writer responsible for the narrative design of this entry in collaboration with Konami, shared his perspective in an interview with Famitsu magazine. He openly acknowledged that many people had asked him about the reasoning behind using the Silent Hill name when the setting is located on a different continent. His answer proved to be particularly thought provoking, as he explained that Silent Hill is not merely a city, but a phenomenon.

According to Ryukishi07, the term “phenomenon” is not just a stylistic choice. It represents something that characters within the story can feel and experience. He believes he succeeded in conveying the essence of Silent Hill through atmosphere and narrative, even though the setting is in Japan. In this sense, Silent Hill represents an endless nightmare, an environment that feels untrustworthy and oppressive, similar to the sensation of drowning without the ability to escape. He invited players to reflect on this interpretation and share their own thoughts.
