Final Fantasy VII original gets a new PC update with speed boost and encounter toggle

A classic RPG returns with modern convenience

Final Fantasy VII has received a newly updated release on PC, giving fans another reason to revisit one of gaming’s most influential titles. Square Enix has launched this refreshed version on Steam, bringing quality-of-life improvements to the original PlayStation-era experience.

Importantly, this release is the classic version of Final Fantasy VII, not the modern remake. As a result, it preserves the iconic visuals, turn-based combat, and unmistakable 1990s atmosphere that longtime fans remember.

Final Fantasy VII New features designed for smoother replays

The updated PC version introduces several features aimed at improving pacing and accessibility. Most notably, players can now activate a three-times speed mode. This option speeds up exploration, battles, and certain scenes, making repeat playthroughs far more convenient.

In addition, players can toggle random battle encounters on or off. This feature allows faster travel through familiar areas while still requiring mandatory story battles to progress. Because of this, revisiting Midgar and beyond feels far less time-consuming.

The update also includes a battle enhancement mode. When enabled, HP and MP refill automatically during combat, and the Limit Break gauge stays full at all times. Together, these tools let players focus on story and exploration rather than grinding.

Autosave support and version changes in Final Fantasy VII

Another welcome addition is autosave functionality. With this system in place, the game now helps prevent progress loss caused by forgotten manual saves. Consequently, the overall experience feels more forgiving without altering the original design.

At the same time, Square Enix has made changes to how the older PC release is handled. The previous version has been renamed to “Final Fantasy VII – 2013 Edition.” Existing owners can still access it, although it is no longer available for new purchases. It is also important to note that save data is not compatible between the old and new versions.

Free upgrade for existing owners

Players who already own Final Fantasy VII on Steam receive this updated version at no additional cost. This decision ensures that longtime supporters benefit from the improvements without needing to repurchase the game. For new players, the updated version is available for around USD 8.20.

A timeless story worth revisiting

Final Fantasy VII tells the story of a world controlled by the Shinra Electric Power Company, which exploits the planet’s life force known as Mako. In the neon-lit city of Midgar, the resistance group Avalanche rises to challenge Shinra’s dominance.

Players step into the role of Cloud Strife, a former SOLDIER turned mercenary. As he joins Avalanche, Cloud becomes entangled in a conflict that will determine the fate of the planet. Along the way, he must confront powerful enemies, hidden truths, and the fragmented memories of his own past.

Preserving the original experience

While this update introduces modern conveniences, it does not alter the story or core gameplay. Instead, it refines the experience for today’s PC players. For those who want to experience Final Fantasy VII as it was originally envisioned, complete with its classic tone and structure, this updated release offers the best way to do so.

Whether you are revisiting a personal favorite or discovering it for the first time, the updated PC version of Final Fantasy VII makes returning to this legendary journey smoother than ever.
