The developers behind Atelier Ryza have openly explained why the franchise reached new sales heights, and the answer came from careful planning rather than coincidence. In November last year, Gust, a studio under Koei Tecmo, released the Atelier Ryza Secret Trilogy Deluxe Pack on PC, PlayStation consoles, and Nintendo platforms. This collection bundled all three games from the Secret Trilogy with additional improvements and content.
In a recent interview with Automaton, the development team shared insights into how the series reinvented itself and why that reinvention worked. The discussion focused not only on gameplay evolution, but also on character design decisions that became central to the franchise’s renewed popularity.

Producer Junzo Hosoi admitted that before Atelier Ryza, the Atelier series had begun to show signs of stagnation. After releases such as Lulua and Nelke, the franchise struggled to maintain momentum. As a result, the team felt a strong need to introduce a fresh direction that could reenergize long-time fans while attracting new players.
Instead of relying on internal preferences or tradition, Gust chose a different approach. The studio invested heavily in market research, studying trends in character appeal, visual presentation, and player preferences across multiple regions. This research guided many of the decisions that would define Ryza’s final design.

Historically, protagonists in the Atelier series featured slim and delicate body types. However, Gust’s research suggested that modern audiences responded more positively to characters with a healthier and more grounded physique. Hosoi explained that the goal was not shock value, but balance.
