Umamusume: Pretty Derby Fans Save Sick Racehorse, Defy PETA Criticism

In a heartwarming turn of events, fans of Umamusume: Pretty Derby came together to save a sick retired racehorse, sparking widespread admiration across the gaming community. The incident also served as a pointed response to recent criticism from the animal rights organization PETA, highlighting how the dedication of players can extend far beyond the virtual world.

Umamusume: Pretty Derby, one of the most popular gacha games today, has captivated fans in Japan and internationally. The game’s success has led to an anime adaptation and recognition as Mobile Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2025. Fans’ attachment goes beyond the in-game horse girls, as the characters are inspired by real-life racehorses, prompting players to care about their real-world counterparts.

The story centers on Risk, a retired racehorse in Brazil, who fell ill and could no longer compete. Risk was sold to a slaughterhouse, facing imminent euthanasia. Jumping with Ana, a Brazilian equestrian and Umamusume fan, called on the community via X and Instagram to raise 2,800 Brazilian Reals (around 16,000 THB) to redeem the horse. The fundraising campaign, posted on December 9, successfully reached its goal by December 11, saving Risk and securing a new home.

Ana emphasized that the achievement was thanks to the support of the Umamusume community, stating, “Umamusume fans are the ones who saved this horse.” Many users referenced this success to counter PETA’s criticism, with some noting that Cygames and the game’s fans have contributed more directly to animal welfare than the organization. This was not the first time the community acted for real-world horses; they previously donated over 2,500 kilograms of fresh grass to the famous racehorse Haru Urara.

This incident illustrates that games like Umamusume: Pretty Derby are not merely entertainment. They inspire tangible compassion and care for real-life creatures. When fans unite, they can create significant positive impact, turning virtual passion into real-world action and offering the strongest response to criticism through deeds rather than words.

Umamusume fans proved that the spirit of gaming can extend beyond screens, saving lives and setting an example of how communities can make a real difference.
