Netflix PS3 Support Ending: Best Cheap Alternatives for Your Setup

Netflix Will End PS3 and Older Smart TV Support in March 2026

The era of legacy streaming is officially coming to an end. Netflix has confirmed that it will discontinue app support on PlayStation 3 starting March 2, 2026. At the same time, several smart TVs and set-top boxes released more than a decade ago will also lose access.

As a result, millions of users worldwide will need to switch devices to continue streaming.

A Nearly 20-Year Partnership Comes to a Close

Netflix first arrived on PlayStation 3 in 2009, at a time when console-based streaming still felt revolutionary. Over the years, the PS3 became one of the most popular ways to access on-demand video in living rooms.

However, technology has moved forward. The console cannot support modern standards such as 4K resolution, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision. Because of these limitations, continued updates are no longer feasible.

Legacy Smart TVs Also Affected

In addition to the PS3 shutdown, smart TVs and streaming boxes released over 10 years ago will also lose support during the same week. These devices rely on outdated operating systems that can no longer meet current security and feature requirements.

Previously, first-generation Fire TV devices lost Netflix access in 2025. Therefore, this move follows a clear pattern across the industry.

Why Some Users Are Especially Disappointed

For many long-time users, the PS3 still offers a unique experience. Notably, it remains one of the last devices capable of displaying native 4:3 content without black bars. Furthermore, it lacks the strict location verification systems now common on newer platforms.

Because of this, many households continued using the PS3 as a shared entertainment hub.

What Are the Best Alternatives?

Fortunately, affordable options exist. Users can add modern streaming devices instead of replacing their TVs.

Popular choices include:

  • Roku Streaming Stick 4K, around USD 40
  • Google TV Streamer or Apple TV 4K, starting near USD 100

These devices restore full access to Netflix and other apps with modern performance.

Meanwhile, users with PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, or newer Xbox consoles can continue streaming without interruption. On the other hand, many fans hope Nintendo’s next console will embrace streaming apps more openly.

The End of a Classic Streaming Era

Although the decision makes technical sense, it still marks the end of a beloved chapter. Netflix on PlayStation 3 helped define how people consumed media through consoles.

Now, the industry moves on, and legacy devices finally step aside.
