According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is internally exploring the possibility of a clamshell-style foldable iPhone, similar in concept to devices like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip. While the idea is still in an early discussion phase, it signals that Apple may be considering multiple foldable form factors for the future of its iPhone lineup.
A Smaller Foldable iPhone Back on the Table
This is not the first time rumors have surfaced about Apple experimenting with a clamshell foldable design. In 2024, The Information reported that Apple had developed several clamshell-style foldable iPhone prototypes while evaluating how it might enter the foldable smartphone market. Ultimately, Apple appeared to prioritize a tablet-style foldable iPhone, which is widely expected to debut later this year.
Now, according to Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter, the clamshell concept has resurfaced internally. Gurman notes that Apple is currently considering a square, clamshell-style foldable phone inside its research and development labs. However, he emphasizes that the product is far from guaranteed to reach the market.

Apple Testing Demand Beyond Its First Foldable
The renewed exploration reportedly depends heavily on how successful Apple’s first foldable iPhone will be. Apple appears to be betting that if its initial foldable device gains strong traction, consumer demand could extend to additional shapes and sizes, much like how traditional slab-style iPhones have diversified over the years.
At this stage, there is no release timeline or concrete product plan for a clamshell foldable iPhone. The concept remains exploratory, but it suggests Apple is thinking beyond a single foldable model and keeping its options open.
Other Foldable Concepts Still in Development
In addition to the clamshell design, Gurman also reiterated that Apple is considering book-style foldable devices. Previously, he reported that Apple had explored an 18-inch foldable iPad, which could potentially be priced around USD 3000, positioning it as a premium productivity-focused device rather than a mainstream consumer product.
Looking Ahead
While Apple’s first foldable iPhone is still expected to be several months away from launch, reports like this offer a glimpse into the company’s longer-term hardware strategy. For now, the confirmed expectation is that Apple’s initial foldable iPhone will feature a 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.8-inch inner display.
Although a clamshell foldable iPhone remains speculative, its consideration highlights Apple’s broader ambition to explore multiple foldable form factors once it officially enters the category.
