Jagex Confirms No Generative AI Will Be Used to Create In-Game Content

Jagex, the UK-based developer behind the legendary MMORPG RuneScape, has announced a strict policy: no Generative AI will be used to create in-game content. The move reassures longtime players that everything they see or hear in the game is crafted entirely by human designers, preserving the artistry and creativity of the development team.

James Dobrowski, Senior Vice President of Product at Jagex, told GamesIndustry.biz that the company has a clear stance on avoiding AI-driven creative content. While Generative AI is gaining traction across the industry, Jagex emphasizes that player experiences must come from the dedicated work of their team, ensuring quality and authenticity.

AI Is Allowed Only Behind the Scenes

This does not mean Jagex is entirely avoiding AI. The studio recognizes AI’s value in non-creative areas, such as Tooling Efficiency, which enhances backend processes, streamlines workflows, and improves technical accuracy. However, all AI usage is strictly confined to backend operations and will not affect in-game content players interact with.

Strict Oversight for Partners

Jagex is also implementing strict audits for external partners to ensure submitted work does not secretly include AI-generated content. This step is part of a broader effort to maintain quality and trust, ensuring every product meets the high standards players expect.

A Contrarian Move in the Industry

Jagex’s policy runs counter to the current trend of AI adoption in gaming. While companies like Nexon explore AI as part of their future roadmap, and Embark Studios faced controversy for using AI in Arc Raiders, Jagex has chosen a more cautious approach. The stance echoes sentiments expressed by Min-Liang Tan, CEO of Razer, who noted that players dislike low-quality AI-generated content but accept AI when used to support internal workflows.

By doubling down on human creativity, Jagex reinforces that the enduring appeal of RuneScape lies not in cutting-edge technology alone, but in the meticulous artistry and ingenuity of real people—something Generative AI cannot fully replicate.
