Blue Archive Producer Addresses “AI Slop” Concerns Affecting the Creative Industry

It is undeniable that the use of artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI, has been gaining increasing attention across many industries, including game development. As the technology continues to evolve, it has also raised a wide range of questions related to ethics and legal responsibility, especially when AI-generated content becomes part of commercial creative works.

Recently, Kim Yong-ha, the producer of Blue Archive, shared his thoughts on concerns raised by some gamers regarding the use of AI in game creation. He explained how Nexon Games currently applies AI technology while also addressing the potential negative consequences it may bring to creative authenticity and consumer trust within the industry.

In recent years, a growing number of new game studios have emerged, some of which rely heavily on AI-generated visuals or AI-assisted content in their projects. This trend has often sparked criticism among players, particularly around issues such as copyright infringement and what many describe as “soulless” or low-effort creations. Kim Yong-ha stated that he understands these concerns and acknowledged that such problems directly influence how games are received by audiences.
He emphasized that careless or low-quality use of AI in content creation can significantly reduce the overall quality of a product. To illustrate his point, Kim compared the situation to a snack with attractive packaging but little substance inside. Even if the exterior looks appealing, consumers will react negatively if the content feels empty or disappointing.

When asked whether AI could completely replace human-created works in the near future, Kim responded that while it may be possible in the long term, the current answer is no. At present, AI is still unable to consistently produce results that meet the expected creative standards. However, he also acknowledged that the usefulness of AI as a tool continues to expand.
Regarding internal usage at Nexon Games, Kim explained that the IO division has actively implemented AI technologies in practical areas such as voice recognition and speech synthesis. At the same time, the company is exploring additional applications. Rather than restructuring the entire organization around AI, Nexon Games has chosen a more grounded approach by first identifying the needs of its developers and then building technologies or services that directly support those needs.
Kim also noted that Nexon Games IO uses AI to assist human developers by reducing repetitive or time-consuming tasks. This allows developers to dedicate more time and effort to areas that require human creativity, ensuring that AI remains a supportive tool rather than a replacement for creative talent.
