Steam Adds Support for Switch 2 Pro and GameCube Controllers

One of the greatest strengths of PC gaming is its freedom to support a wide variety of peripherals, ranging from keyboards and specialized fighting game controllers to racing wheels and custom hardware setups that consoles rarely match. This flexibility is a major part of why many players in the SEA region enjoy building and optimizing their own play experience.
While console makers like Xbox and PlayStation have long supported their full lineup of controllers on PC, Nintendo also stepped into the arena with the arrival of the first Switch model built on USB-C compatibility. This gave PC players even more options, especially for those who enjoy collecting controllers or simply prefer alternatives to keyboard and mouse.

Now Steam has officially confirmed that in its latest beta version, it has unlocked full compatibility for two iconic Nintendo controllers. The first is the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, an upgraded successor to the original model released years ago. The second, and perhaps the biggest surprise, is the GameCube Controller, a beloved classic that will now work through USB-C when connected via the Wii U or Switch adapter.
For this new update, Steam not only enables these controllers to function seamlessly on PC but also improves in-game usability by allowing many titles to display button layouts that match the actual hardware. This helps players navigate controls accurately without manual remapping, making the Switch 2 Pro and GameCube controllers feel like natural extensions of Steam’s existing peripheral support. Access is currently limited to users running the Steam beta version, but the update is expected to roll out widely to all users in future releases.
Steam, which first launched in 2003 as a platform focused on game updates before evolving into the world’s leading digital storefront, continues to expand its features. With online integration, anti-cheat support, community forums, and robust mod tools, it remains a central hub for PC players in the SEA region. Stay tuned for more updates and features coming soon.
