Resident Evil Requiem Revives Online Concepts

Resident Evil Requiem has become one of the most closely watched titles in the survival horror genre not only as the newest entry in the iconic franchise but also as a major release tied to the 30-year anniversary of the series. The game has been in development for more than half a decade and has evolved significantly through different internal phases before reaching the form players were able to try during the recent showcase at Thailand Game Show 2025. One of the most notable changes throughout its development involves the removal and reimagining of an online multiplayer mode which at one point was part of the original vision. Early footage of that version surfaced years ago and revealed that the project once experimented with a more connected structure before the team ultimately decided to priorities fear and tension through a single player experience.

A new detail shared by producer Masato Kumazawa in an interview with Press Start Australia confirms that the final version of Resident Evil Requiem will still integrate certain components that originated from the cancelled online build. Although there are no specifics on how these features will appear, Kumazawa explained that the multiplayer version was promising in quality yet fundamentally diminished the horror that lies at the heart of the franchise. This realisation resulted in a renewed commitment to a focused and atmospheric solo experience while carrying forward select ideas that can strengthen the final game without compromising its identity.
Those who recently played Requiem’s early demo at various events have already noted that its level of fear is comparable to or even more intense than Resident Evil VII, the previous major reinvention of the series. This heightened atmosphere reflects the team’s decision to prioritise dread and storytelling in a way that aligns with what fans expect from a core entry in the franchise. The integration of selected concepts from the cancelled online version allows the developers to preserve the game’s original creative ambitions while ensuring the tone remains faithful to the survival horror roots that define Resident Evil.
Resident Evil Requiem follows the story of Grace Ashcroft, daughter of Alyssa, a journalist who survived the T Virus outbreak of 1998. Grace finds herself drawn back to a place tied to her darkest memories after her mother is mysteriously murdered. The narrative expands into themes that connect personal trauma with forgotten histories surrounding a long-abandoned town. Powered by an enhanced version of the RE Engine and developed for next generation hardware, the game aims to deliver more lifelike character performances, more atmospheric environments and more cinematic storytelling across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC when it launches on 27 February 2026.
THIS IS OUR SAY
Resident Evil Requiem looks ready to embrace everything that makes the series unforgettable and the decision to refine its online elements into a stronger single player experience shows that the developers are committed to delivering horror that leaves a lasting mark.
